Interworking Methodologies for DCOM and CORBA.
The DCOM and CORBA standards provide location-transparent access to network-resident software through language independent object interfaces. Although the two standards address similar problems, they do so in incompatible ways: DCOM clients cannot use CORBA objects, and CORBA clients cannot utilize DCOM objects, due to incompatible object system infrastructures.
This thesis investigates the performance of bridging tools to resolve the incompatibilities between DCOM and CORBA, in ways that allow clients to cross object system boundaries. Two kinds of tools were constructed and studied: tools that bind clients to services at compile time, and tools that support dynamic client-server bindings. Data developed in the thesis shows that static bridges are on the order of five times faster than dynamic bridges. Measurements conducted with remote clients also showed that with increased network delays, performance differences between static and dynamic bridges become negligible
Chiral black hole in three-dimensional gravitational Chern-Simons
A chiral black hole can be defined from the three-dimensional pure
gravitational Chern-Simons action as an independent gravitational theory. The
third order derivative of the Cotton tensor gives a dimensional constant which
plays a role of the cosmological constant. The handedness of angular momentum
depends on the signature of the Chern-Simons coefficient. Even in the massless
black hole which corresponds to the static black hole, it has a nonvanishing
angular momentum. We also study statistical entropy and thermodynamic
stability.Comment: 6 pages, a reference added, minor changes to introductio
Recovery of scandium from acidic waste solutions by means of polymer inclusion membranes
Scandium is a raw material with properties that promise considerable potential for application in alloys to enable aviation fuel savings and as dopants for use in sustainable energy production using solid oxide fuel cells. Despite these attractive properties, scandium is rarely used due to its scarcity and unreliable supply. Therefore, new strategies for scandium recovery are of economic priority. In this study, polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) consisting of PVDF-HFP, 2-NPOE and DEHPA, were optimised for selective scandium separation from real TiO2 production waste. With the optimised system, >60% of the scandium was recovered with high selectivity, resulting in scandium mole fraction at more than two orders of magnitude higher in the receiving phase than in the original waste. This suggests PIMs may be an effective way to recover scandium from bulk waste, thus easing the scarcity and insecurity that currently limit its bulk application
Beyond livestock carrying capacity in the Sahelian and Sudanian zones of West Africa
We applied the process-based model, LandscapeDNDC, to estimate feed availability in the Sahelian and Sudanian agro-ecological zones of West Africa as a basis for calculating the regional Livestock Carrying Capacity (LCC). Comparison of the energy supply (S) from feed resources, including natural pasture, browse, and crop residues, with energy demand (D) of the livestock population for the period 1981–2020 allowed us to assess regional surpluses (S > D) or deficits (S < D) in feed availability. We show that in the last 40 years a large-scale shift from surplus to deficit has occurred. While during 1981–1990 only 27% of the area exceeded the LCC, it was 72% for the period 2011–2020. This was caused by a reduction in the total feed supply of ~ 8% and an increase in feed demand of ~ 37% per-decade, driven by climate change and increased livestock population, respectively. Overall, the S/D decreased from ~ 2.6 (surplus) in 1981 to ~ 0.5 (deficit) in 2019, with a north–south gradient of increasing S/D. As climate change continues and feed availability may likely further shrink, pastoralists either need to source external feed or significantly reduce livestock numbers to avoid overgrazing, land degradation, and any further conflicts for resources
Central Charges in 2d Reduced Cosmological Massive Gravity
In the dimensionally reduced model of the 2+1 dimensional cosmological
massive gravity, we obtain the central charges of the two types of the black
hole based on the entropy function method. One is for the BTZ black hole and
the other one is actually for the warped AdS black hole.Comment: 12 pages; v2. typos corrected, references added, to appear in Phys.

Simulation of COâ‚‚ fluxes in European Forest Ecosystems with the coupled soil-vegetation process model "LandscapeDNDC"
CO2 exchange processes in forest ecosystems are of profound ecological and economic importance, meaning there is a need for generally applicable simulation tools. However, process-based ecosystem models, which are in principal suitable for the task, are commonly evaluated at only a few sites and for a limited number of plant species. It is thus often unclear if the processes and parameters involved are suitable for model application at a regional scale. We tested the LandscapeDNDC forest growth module PnET (derived from the Photosynthetic / EvapoTranspiration model) with site-specific as well as multi-site calibrated parameters using independent data sets of eddy covariance measurements across a European transect. Although site-specific parametrization is superior (r2 for pooled Gross Primary Production (GPP) during calibration period: site-specific = 0.93, multi-site = 0.88; r2 for pooled Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) during calibration period: site-specific = 0.81, multi-site = 0.73), we show that general parameters are able to represent carbon uptake over periods of several years. The procedure has been applied for the three most dominant European tree species i.e., Scots pine, Norway spruce and European beech. In addition, we discuss potential model improvements with regard to the sensitivity of parameters to site conditions differentiated into climate, nutrient and drought influences

Extreme Asymmetry in the Disk of V1247 Ori
We present the first near-infrared scattered-light detection of the
transitional disk around V1247 Ori, which was obtained using high-resolution
polarimetric differential imaging observations with Subaru/HiCIAO. Our imaging
in the H band reveals the disk morphology at separations of ~0.14"-0.86"
(54-330 au) from the central star. The polarized intensity (PI) image shows a
remarkable arc-like structure toward the southeast of the star, whereas the
fainter northwest region does not exhibit any notable features. The shape of
the arm is consistent with an arc of 0.28" 0.09" in radius (108 au from
the star), although the possibility of a spiral arm with a small pitch angle
cannot be excluded. V1247 Ori features an exceptionally large azimuthal
contrast in scattered, polarized light; the radial peak of the southeastern arc
is about three times brighter than the northwestern disk measured at the same
distance from the star. Combined with the previous indication of an
inhomogeneous density distribution in the gap at 46 au, the notable
asymmetry in the outer disk suggests the presence of unseen companions and/or
planet-forming processes ongoing in the arc.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PAS
